Narcissism

Most of us may already know this term but just to have a little more clarity, narcissism is a totally self-centred personality style, includes a person thinking very highly of himself or herself and believing that others are way inferior.

A person suffering from narcissism is a narcissist who also lacks the ability to think about or care for feelings of others.

While narcissists are all about control, control and control, let's understand some very common traits of a narcissist;

: Sense of superiority and self importance.

: Lack of responsibility which in turn means  it always has to be someone else's fault for every wrong in their life.

: Exaggerated need for attention and validation which ofcourse can only come from others.

: A powerful need to control and become vindictive when things or people don't go their way.

:  Fragile Ego ; If and when they recieve a minor ( not to talk about major) criticism from their coworker, family or friends, be ready for that so very drastic reaction.

: Chronic and persistent Envy : No matter what they achieve in life, 5 bedroom apartment, the most fancy car, jewellery and money galore,  narcissists will always find a reason to compare themselves with others and feel resentful and envious.

: Being self absorbed ; Only and only their feelings count, only their lives matter, only they are important and they will go to any lengths to get what they want including use of threats, silent treatment, use of guilt or other forms of abusive behaviour.

: Lack compassion, care and empathy for others.

: Lack of boundaries : Believe others feel or think and if not, they should feel and think the way they do. Also cannot take 'No' for an answer.

: Interpersonal exploitative behaviour - If you have ever felt being taken advantage of repeatedly, could be in terms of verbal bullying, mocking under the garb of "just a joke", walking away with family inheritance or any such thing where one feels exploited, it is totally a narcissistic trait/s

: Sense of entitlement - This person has unreasonable expectations of a favourable treatment from people around them irrespective of their behaviour.

: Exhibits arrogant behaviour and/or haughty attitude

This doesn't wrap up all the signs but are just a few of them. There is enough and more data available on social media and books but I hope through this blog, we are able to identify if I am a narcissist or if I am dealing with one or many of them around me.

Narcissism is not confined to a gender and is found in men and women both.

Before we end here, just wanted to say that people are not just born narcissists.

This personality is linked to the

 1) Environment - The way parents treat their children can predict how narcissistic their kids are ;either with too much adoration or with too much criticism.

2) Genes - Inherited personality traits.

Narcissists always do what is best for them because, in their minds, what is best for them is best for the world. Martha Stout

Let's talk a little more about narcissism, its effects and recovery in my next blog 😊
